Understanding exactly what IELTS score you need — not just an overall band, but individual section minimums — is critical to your application planning. IELTS is scored 0–9 across Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking; your overall band is the average, rounded to the nearest 0.5.

Australia, Germany and Italy
Australia: Group of Eight top programs want 7.0 overall with 6.5 each; Nursing/Teaching/Medicine 7.0–7.5 with no band below 7.0; the subclass 500 visa minimum is 5.5. Many universities also accept PTE. Germany: TU Munich and LMU want 6.5–7.0; most public universities accept 6.0; TOEFL iBT 90–100 is commonly accepted in place of IELTS. Italy: Politecnico di Milano and Bologna accept 5.5–6.5 depending on program; most public universities accept 5.5–6.0; Bocconi wants 7.0+.
IELTS vs TOEFL: which should you take?
Take IELTS if applying to the UK (mandatory for UKVI), Canada (SDS) or Australia. TOEFL is fine for Germany, the Netherlands and the USA, but is not accepted for the UK student visa. Many students take both for maximum flexibility.
If your score isn't enough
- Retake — most students improve 0.5–1.0 band with focused 4–8 week prep on their weakest section.
- Pre-sessional English — 6–10 week courses that waive IELTS if completed successfully.
- Apply to different programs — a graduate diploma version may accept 6.0 where the main program won't.
- PTE Academic — AI-assessed and often found easier, widely accepted across Australia, the UK, Canada and Europe.
An 8-week preparation plan
- Weeks 1–2: diagnostic full test; identify and focus on your weakest section.
- Weeks 3–4: grammar and vocabulary building; daily English reading.
- Weeks 5–6: intensive timed practice tests under exam conditions.
- Week 7: focus on Speaking — record yourself and review for filler words and pronunciation.
- Week 8: full mock tests, review weak areas, mental preparation.
